Baked Fresh Daily in Mt Holly

We don't just bake bread. We craft it.

Every loaf at The Dog Pound starts with a 48-hour cold ferment, stone-milled flour, and zero shortcuts. If it isn't worth pulling from the oven at dawn, it isn't on our shelves.

About Us

Baked with stubborn
good judgment.

The Dog Pound started as a weekend experiment in a home kitchen β€” a sourdough starter named Buster, a bag of whole wheat, and a refusal to accept that bread should taste like compressed foam. Five years later, we're still using the same starter, the same principles, and the same conviction: if you're going to feed someone, do it right.

Our bakery in Mt Holly produces small batches daily. We work with local mills for our flour, source dairy from nearby farms, and let time do what no machine can replicate. The result is bread with a crust that shatters and a crumb that tells the whole story.

Our Story

Started with a
starter named Buster.

In 2018, we bought a used deck oven from a closing restaurant in Charlotte and a jar of wild yeast from a farmer's market. That jar became Buster β€” our sourdough starter, still going strong.

We spent two years perfecting recipes in a home kitchen, selling at a single Saturday table at the Mt Holly market. The line around the block convinced us to open a proper shop. We moved into our current space in 2020 and have been baking every day since.

Today, The Dog Pound employs a small team of bakers who treat every loaf like it's the last one they'll bake that day β€” because honestly, it kind of is.

What People Say

Loved by the
neighbors we feed.

"I drove 40 minutes out of my way after reading about the 48-hour ferment. Worth every mile. The sourdough has a depth I haven't found anywhere else in the area."

M

M. Thompson

Mt Holly resident

"The croissants are unreal. I bring a box to my family every Sunday and they disappear in ten minutes. My kids ask for the 'flaky bread' before anything else."

S

S. Ramirez

Huntersville

"As a chef, I'm picky. I came in skeptical and left with three loaves and a list of their pantry items to order. The honey is from a farm two counties over β€” you can taste it."
